![]() ![]() Parents, children or siblings of a person with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy should ask their health care providers about screening for the disease. People with one parent with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy have a 50% chance of having the genetic mutation for the disease. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is usually passed down through families (inherited). This can trigger arrhythmias in some people. People with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy also have a rearrangement of heart muscle cells (myofiber disarray). This makes it hard for the heart to relax and reduces the amount of blood the ventricle can hold and send to the body with each heartbeat. However, the heart's main pumping chamber (left ventricle) might stiffen. If there's no significant blocking of blood flow, the condition is called nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is called obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The thickened wall might block blood flow out of the heart. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy typically affects the muscular wall (septum) between the two bottom chambers of the heart (ventricles). If you are concerned about your cat's heart health please contact the Boulder vets right away for an appointment.Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is usually caused by changes in genes (gene mutations) that cause the heart muscle to thicken. The most common procedure is the installation of a pacemaker for long-term and better control of the arrhythmia. In more serious cases, the Boulder vets may recommend surgical procedures by a veterinary cardiologist. Many medications can help control cardiac arrhythmia, some of which have side effects. If an underlying cause of the arrhythmia is found, such as kidney disease or hyperthyroidism, then treating the underlying disease will resolve the irregular rhythm. Patients with an electrolyte imbalance will be hospitalized to receive intravenous fluid therapy. Most cats will be treated on an outpatient basis. Treatment Options for Irregular Heartbeats The possible causes for an irregular heartbeat can vary but here are some of the most common reasons. Physical weakness, due to too long of a pause in between heartbeats.Heart murmur, due to turbulent blood flow within the heart.Heart gallop (during a cycle of contractions, instead of the normal 2 beats, a third sound is audible).Common symptoms of irregular heart rhythm are: It is important to know the symptoms of an irregular heartbeat in cats so that you know what to do and when to bring your cat in to see the Rocky Mountain Veterinary Cardiology vets right away. This causes the heart to beat either too fast or too slow, or sometimes to skip beats. Irregular heart rhythms affect many cats and are characterized by an abnormality in the cycling of electrical impulses that regulate the heart's beating. Some breeds, like Persians, Maine Coon cats, and Himalayans, tend to be more prone to irregular heart rhythms than others. An irregular heartbeat occurs from time to time when a cat is under stress, nervous or scared. Irregular heart rhythm, or cardiac arrhythmia, is important to take note of but is not always a serious condition. A healthy heart muscle then contracts and pumps blood through the arteries and out into the body. This conduction system generates impulses, or waves, which flow through the muscles of the heart. The heart is controlled by an electrical conduction system which controls the heart rate. ![]()
